Yet the message of his songs still remains strongly Christian and carries the imagery of the people "rising up" from the existing situation. Spirituals in the book are defined as historical songs that speak out about black lives in a very interesting gospel way.

This work then has a profound impact on Cone's mature systematic work "God of the Oppressed" and has borne fruit in more recent Black Liberation and Womanist thought that has drawn theological insight from slave narratives, the hush harbor church, the experiences of Black female domestic workers, etc.

The book starts out talking about the harsh reality blacks faced during this time. Some of the elements of African music and the American black spirituals are The spirituals and the blues common.
