a highly skilful novel, taut, addictive, full of stuff to keep you hungrily reading. And damn, if Abbott didn't take me right down the road of these secrets. To adapt a line from Tolstoy, every happy universe is the same; every unhappy universe is unhappy in its own way.
Then come two chapters of dark-energy-driven apocalypses, one in which the universe expands forever, slowly emptying and darkening, and one in which the universe literally rips itself apart. This could result from a much larger eternal ekpyrotic Universe where colliding 3D branes result in repeated Big Bangs.
Most of my familiarity with these subatomic particles comes from watching reruns of TBBT, a show I used to love until it got unbearable to watch. The beginning of this book had me all smiley and nostalgic. None of this is the case here though. I might have been better off buying my own copy of this book and marking it up!
What we may know, given time, and what splendors might never, ever reach us. I read this, cover-to-cover, in an afternoon; it's that compelling a read. Everyone's favourite noir pixie takes a step out of her The End of Everything zone with this fantastic contemporary novel. Her dealing with Evie's disappearance makes The End of Everything something of a coming of age tale.
Albeit very interesting, the writing almost ruined it for me. Got me up to speed in current thinking in cosmology, even if a few of her "physics for amateurs" bits went by me. She is very close to Evies family especially her father and they cling to each other in some respects;as the mother has withdrawn herself from any thing that happens and Evies older sister Dusty ,until the end, is not featured that much, leaving the father to cope with Evies disappearance on his own and so he tends to gravitate towards Lizzie.
To understand where the various ideas regarding the end of the Universe come from, you need to understand some of the physics and the cosmology.
It gets dark, very dark.
Do we still have to take the trash out next Tuesday if the universe is going to die someday? The Guardian UK "THE END OF EVERYTHING is Abbott's most refined and rapturous offering yet.
