And as Eliot's fascination increases, so does the jealousy of his disrespected lover, adding fuel to a dangerously smoldering fire that could erupt into unexpected violence at any moment. I would love to see this in the hands of a modern director with a really good ensemble cast and a greengage summer cinematographer.

Rumer Godden, The Greengage Summer

Apparently, this is based on a real story experienced by the author when she was abroad with her mother and siblings when she was 15 and her older sister was 18. Greengage summer moved to in in 1978, when she was 70, to be near her daughter Jane.

Left adrift in an old hotel, the children are innocently manipulated by others, and the eldest is being groomed by a much older man. Rumer Godden was a highly decorated British writer, and this book is one of her most lyrical.

😂 I'm so surprised that this book is not one of the Great Classics. Cecil has her first period, and is kindly looked after by Eliot, who orders hot tea and bread and butter for her, greengage summer giving her her first adult kiss. A great book for writers.
